Progress. Evolution. Destiny. These labels are attached to the idea of the inevitability of advancement. Advancement, however, can have either retarding or catalyzing forces that influence it. The deep penetration of information technology into the delivery of healthcare is inevitable, and has indeed been steadily progressing, yielding great benefits to patients. This forward movement, however, has been retarded by many factors, including the fragmentation of the healthcare market and the great number of competing agendas among stakeholders. These dampening forces have prevented the full realization of the promise of information technology to be manifested within the healthcare context. Our mission is to cut these tethers and catalyze the infusion of health information technology into the delivery of care so the instruments of medicine share the vanguard with those of other critical professions.
